Reflect
Think of the way the Gospel writers describe Christ’s attitudes towards others: to those in need, to those who oppose him, to those who kill him.
We concluded on Saturday with the thought that we are part of a new humanity. It doesn’t always feel like that, however. There are many challenges in Christian community with which we must cope, so Paul once again calls us to think about Christ.
First: Christ’s example (12-14). A basic rule for our behavior towards others is this: act towards others as God has acted towards you. By way of an example, we are to “Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (13). If you have experienced God’s forgiveness, then demonstrate forgiveness to others. The same principle applies in verses 12-14. In our relationship with others, we are to show mercy and compassion. In our estimate of ourselves, we are to show humility. In our response to how others treat us, we are to behave with gentleness and patience. These are all qualities which Christ exemplified, and since our life is lived in union with him, these same qualities are to be ours.
Second: Christ’s peace (15). All our relationships are to be governed by Christ’s peace within us. It is sometimes said that where you have three Christians you’ll have four opinions, and this can easily lead to division. So the wholeness, harmony and unity which Christ brings are to be the active referee in Christian community.
Third: Christ’s Word (16) is to determine what happens in our lives and in our fellowship. The truth of the Gospel shapes us, guiding our lives and determining our priorities. This was especially important for the Colossians, under attack from false teaching, but all Christians need to become biblically minded, thoroughly soaked in God’s Word. We must allow that Word to “dwell in us richly” (16, ESV). A true church is a community where Christ’s example, Christ’s peace and Christ’s Word are at the center.
Apply
In what ways do you feel you are failing to display the qualities which Christ exemplified? How can your union with Christ correct this?
Closing prayer
Father God, I want to live my life as Christ lived, embracing his peace, and obeying his Word. Release the Spirit within me, so I may be obedient in all things.
