Reflect
“The Christian faith, from beginning to completion, is about relationships. Here (3:18–4:1), Paul holds before us a new quality for our marriages, our families, and our vocations” (Dr. Gary W. Demarest). We must demonstrate to the world the difference Jesus Christ makes in our relationships.
Union with Christ is not a spiritual experience removed from the realities of life. Paul speaks of how this is to be seen in the key relationships of family and working life. His culture was different from ours, with different social conventions, but his teaching was revolutionary in the way he expressed concern, respect and worth for those whom the society of that day looked down upon–women, children and slaves. Paul’s radical call to Christian living in all human relationships was profoundly counter-cultural, and there are three important principles.
First, all relationships must be seen from the perspective of our relationship with Christ. The words “the Lord” appear six times (18,20,22,23,24 [twice]). To relate to one another “in the Lord” puts our relationships into a different context. My relationship with my wife or daughter or employer must be conducted in a way that is consistent with Christ and his values. We treat people as made in God’s image, people for whom Jesus gave his life. As Christians have followed this ethic it has led to radical reform in society. Second, we have mutual responsibilities. Paul doesn’t stress the power of men or of bosses, but underlines the responsibilities of each partner. This calls us to look at our own responsibilities rather than our rights. It demonstrates how mutuality encourages respect and worth. Third, we are to live with wholehearted commitment. He urges slaves to see their work as service for the Lord Jesus Christ (24). This transforms our motives in everyday work and in demanding Christian service. We are to work energetically, not reluctantly, serving the Lord Christ. He is Lord of all, and our lives and relationships are wrapped up in him.
