Today’s reading from God’s Promise Kept

Light in the darkness

Opening Prayer

Lord God, how can I thank you for providing light in my darkness, for giving me everything I need in your Son? Holy Spirit, please help me to make my life one filled with expressions of gratitude.

Read Isaiah 9:2, 6-7

2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Meditation

The northern regions of the Promised Land were often the first impacted by enemy invasions. Isaiah foretold that they would also be the first to see the great light that was coming. Descended from David, the promised one would be fully God and fully man, he would be like none other, and he would rule with justice and righteousness forever. It might have seemed too good to be true, but God promised!
