Today’s reading from Lenten Journey

Preparing the Way for Faith

Pray

Begin with prayer, opening your heart to His Word and Spirit.

Read Mark 1:9-11

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Reflect

It is not surprising that John attracted attention from the religious leaders. Proselytes were coming to him, confessing their sins and being baptized while the priests mediated forgiveness in the Temple. Although other revolutionary movements had also started in the wilderness, John the Baptist was attracting a following. John knew his calling and his message – preparing the way for faith in Jesus.

Closing prayer

Merciful God, we thank you for people in Scripture, and for those you have placed in our personal lives, who prepared the way for us to know Jesus. With John’s humility and boldness, may we also point others to the Savior. Amen.
