Today’s reading from Lenten Journey

The Transfiguration

Pray

Begin with prayer, opening your heart to God’s Word and Spirit.

Read Mark 9:2-8

The Transfiguration
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

Reflect

This week there will be many different reactions to Jesus that include attention and delight, hostility and anger, distraction, amazement and fear, concern, confusion, and even rejection. We will see Jesus press on with courage and care as he continues to teach with word and action, challenging those who oppose him. The event on the mountain called the “Transfiguration” gave his closest followers a taste of the glory of Christ that was to come. The presence of Elijah and Moses would have reminded them of God’s promises and saving power in history. God’s voice would be preparation for what was to come—God’s gift and saving power in the death and resurrection of his only Son Jesus.

Closing prayer

Father, thank you that Jesus is not only your beloved Son; he is the King of Glory! Help us to listen to him always. Amen.
