The Baptism of Jesus
Begin with prayer, opening your heart to God’s Word and Spirit.
Read Mark 1:9-11
9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
In his baptism, sinless Jesus identified with sinful man. Before now Jesus had been unknown, but now God spoke from heaven, and everyone who heard his voice knew that Jesus was God’s perfect son. Jesus’ ministry began with the praise and affirmation of his Father.
Lord Jesus, it was for us that you were baptized; thank you for your willingness to make yourself nothing, identify with our sin, and then die in our place so we can be reconciled to God. Amen.
