Reflect
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?” (1 Sam. 15:22).
In the last book of the Old Testament, the Prophet Malachi writes to call back God’s people who returned from the Babylonian Exile to lives of heartfelt faith and commitment to God’s Law. Worship tops the list. What kind of worship does God receive? Because God loves us, we might think that he approves of our unqualified adoration. Shouldn’t worship in any form be acceptable? But our passage for today teaches us otherwise. One truth confronts us that is pervasive throughout the Bible: God does not receive all worship.
Regardless of where you live in the world, God classifies our worship in one of two categories: acceptable or unacceptable. Halfway worship is not acceptable. God’s message to the priests in our passage for today is that he rejects worship like this (7). The priests were sacrificing animals they did not want. They gave God the blemished offerings and kept the choice ones for themselves (8). Better not to sacrifice at all! Shut the temple gates (10)!
We might find it difficult to understand God’s reaction. After all, we make efforts, imperfect as they may be, to come to church and worship God even though we are very busy. Basically we do the best we can. Why wouldn’t God just accept what we have to offer? It helps to remember that God is not asking for perfect worship. What he wants is sincere worship. One definition of worship strikes at the heart of this issue. Worship is quite simply taking God seriously. Worship does not require offering a perfect prayer, conducting a detailed ritual, or mastering a complex theology. But we must take God seriously, for to trivialize our worship by half-hearted or insincere expression is to offend God and, in effect, waste our time. If we want to truly encounter God, we must do it on his terms.
Apply
In corporate church worship services or your private devotional time, identify several ways that you get distracted, then make every effort to prevent them.
Closing prayer
Lord, I know that my worship may not be perfect but please help me to take You seriously so that my worship will be acceptable and You will be glorified.
