Think Further
A key virtue in Proverbs is “prudence” (1:3,4). This might be summed up as “look before you leap.” It means thinking about the probable outcomes of your actions before acting. The first two sections of this passage are about people who have not done that. Proverbs encourages generosity towards the poor (28:27), but warns against taking rash financial risks. If you have done that, then do all you can to get out of the situation. If necessary, lose your dignity rather than your money (3). The laziness of the sluggard is contrasted with the prudent activity of the ant (6). Do not put off doing today what you need to do to prepare for tomorrow.
The portrait in verses 12-15 is somewhat puzzling since the meaning of the actions in verse 13 is unclear. However, it is a picture of someone so essentially evil (12a) that it affects their use of their body parts (12b-13), inner life (14a), effect upon society (14b) and destiny (15). Here is an example of what the apostle Paul said we should not be; “Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness” (Rom. 6:13). The final verse is the main point: wicked people like this character will not escape punishment, so do not be like them. Instead, be their opposite.
The seven things that the Lord hates (16-19) also involve the use of body parts. At the center of the list is the heart. In Hebrew the word “heart” is not used as the center of the emotions but the center of thinking and will. It is better translated as “mind.” That is why Paul, when urging us “to offer your bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God,” tells us that to do this we need to have renewed minds (Rom. 12:1,2).

What does it mean to “offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness” (Rom. 6:13)?
