Reflect
“Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he!” (Martin Luther, A Mighty Fortress is our God). What a truth to celebrate!
In the very first verse of Revelation and in the very last, the same word occurs: Jesus, the One who saves. He saves us both for something (the wedding banquet) and from something (the warfare orchestrated by dragon and beasts). He is both the bridegroom in vs. 1-10 and the warrior in vs. 11-21.
Only in Revelation could such a stark contrast be managed in one chapter. A Passover meal enjoyed in the upper room is followed by the clashing swords and clubs of the Sanhedrin as they invade Gethsemane. Peter’s clumsy slash misses Malchus’ head, but Jesus shows us all a better way. With him the sword gives way to the Word. Isn’t it striking that the warrior in ch. 19 is identified by words on his garment and thigh?
Words are our weapon as we reclaim territory from Satan, and for God, in daily warfare. We use prayer, words as we talk to God about people, and Scripture, words as we talk to people about God. Small daily victories encourage us to await that final victory when the beasts will be dumped in the lake of fire and, a millennium later, as Satan will join them. The “great supper of God” (17) is an awesome and gruesome appetizer for the “wedding supper of the Lamb” (9).
Even today, we can live joyfully in the atmosphere of Psalm 23:5. In the safety of the fold, the Shepherd provides (“You prepare a table before me”), while we can see through the cracks in the rocks the glittering eyes of our predators (“in the presence of my enemies”). But, as Luther’s great hymn says in verse 3, “Lo, (their) doom is sure!”
Apply
Jesus first came as a Lamb to be a sacrifice for sin. When he returns it will be as a Conqueror and King (2 Thess. 1:7-10). Thank God for your security in him now and forever.
Closing prayer
Our Father, help me to be watchful for, and prayerful against, the evil one, and to rejoice in Your certain victory over him.
