Uproot Sin and Idolatry
Opening Prayer
Lord, remind me that the brutality of the cross is a reminder of how serious You take sin; never an excuse to sin flippantly.

Meditate
“Unraveling the tangled roots and identifying the murky elements of our motivations [is]. . . an endless task. . . Growth in holiness cannot continue where repenting from the heart has stopped” (J.I. Packer).
Think Further
Scripture depicts God as one who makes covenants with his people. He promises to take care of them and bless them but expects them to obey and worship him alone. Having brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt, God made a covenant with them at Horeb (Sinai). Now, as they were about to enter the Promised Land, God renewed his covenant at Moab. They were to “carefully follow” the terms of the covenant (9). They were reminded how God had faithfully and miraculously led them thus far. They had seen these things with their own eyes (3).
Nevertheless, Israel was prone to forget and abandon God for useless idols. God knew that it was easy to bring Israel out of Egypt but more difficult to bring Egypt out of Israel. Idolatrous roots planted in pagan lands could remain in the hearts of the people. They must make sure that these are uprooted; otherwise they will spread and produce “bitter poison” that will destroy individuals and the nation (18). Sadly, Israel would be unfaithful. Without godly minds, eyes and ears (4), they would turn away from God to embrace worthless idols (26). As a result the nation would be “uprooted” (28).
We must not be presumptuous about God. He has revealed his Word to us and it should be obeyed (29). It is possible to look at the words of his covenant with us and deceive ourselves into thinking, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way” (19). He has taken us from the world and wants to take the world out of us. We are called to cooperate and make sure sin is uprooted (Col. 3:5-8) and no bitter root remains in and among us (Heb. 12:15).
Apply
Ask God for a godly mind, with godly eyes and ears, to give you sight and insight. Resolve not to entertain even a whisper of sin and idolatry in your heart.
Closing prayer
God of Grace, You have called us out of darkness into Your glorious light. Fill us with Your light and Your love and may our hearts be soft and responsive toward You.
