Meditate
“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes….” (Rom. 1:16). But to believe, they must hear.
Think Further
It must have felt even better than winning the lottery! A day that started with the kind of gamble that only desperation can drive you to—we’re dead if we do, dead if we don’t—ended in astonishing fortune for these leprosy sufferers. Talk about rags to riches! They start out with nothing and end up with food, drink, clothes and more riches than they know what to do with.
That’s when it kicks in. All week we have faced the pressure from outside against telling the good news, and now we face the pressure from within ourselves. At the moment of triumph, hoarding their treasure trove, dreaming of how they might spend it, conscience stirred. They thought of others: “We’re not doing right.”
Some of us, of course, will have lost our excitement about the Gospel. Perhaps it was too long ago since we were desperate like these men. Perhaps we have grown familiar with the Gospel treasure, and the hope, pardon and life it brings no longer stir our hearts. Others of us just reserve the excitement for one another. We manage to forget that we have stumbled upon a treasure that makes today a day of good news for everyone and anyone.
I have a good friend who keeps telling me that there are only two reasons why we don’t tell others the Gospel. Either we don’t believe it’s true or we don’t love others. I bristle every time I hear the comment but I’m still looking for the third reason!
Apply
“This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves” (2 Kings 7:9). Is there any sense in which you might need to say that?
Closing prayer
Lord, forgive me when I am wrongly silent. Recapture for me a fresh wonder at Your Good News and a love for those You long to know it.
