Reflect
Jesus knows our hearts and all there is to know about our lives. He desires that, by his Holy Spirit, we might see ourselves and others as he does and seek to bring others to know and love him.
Jesus’ sense of timing was controlled by doing the Father’s will in the Father’s time. The middle of the day, the hottest time, is not when one would expect to meet someone at a well to draw water, even at a “famous well” like Jacob’s well (see Gen. 3:18,19). Jesus did not approach this woman with condescension or condemnation. He sought to reach her on a “level field,” asking her to help him. The request for water is turned into the offer of “living water” (10,14): the gift of the Holy Spirit to bring the heart and mind to recognize Jesus. Jesus would not be dissuaded by tangents or a focus on “the physical world,” or even religious debates (20). Every time the woman tried to divert or highjack the conversation, Jesus tried to reach into her heart and give her “spiritual truth.”
Jesus was also willing to confront her sin: “Go call your husband” (16). But his willingness to confront her sin and convict her heart was not to condemn her or even judge her as much as it was to reach her. Jesus was always about truth, always about where one’s heart was regarding the Father. Jesus pointed out more than once that he wanted what the Father wanted: people that were his “in spirit and in truth” (see Psa. 51:15-17). God wants people to know him and to love him, without pretense, hypocrisy, or by following human laws, precepts, or religiosity.
Jesus was offering a “spring of living water” in a dry land. He was offering true worship in a land of false worship and man-made religion, as well as laws that had little to do with Kingdom living.
