Reflect
“Communion has become for me an image of startling freshness. I can celebrate the sensation of coming to life through the symbol of Christ’s blood transfused into me” (Dr. Paul Brand, 1914–2003).
The focus in these verses is on blood, especially the blood of Jesus. The shedding of blood is necessary under both covenants because “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (22). Although the need for the shedding of blood is the same under both covenants, a contrast is drawn between the ceremonial, outward and limited effects of the blood shed under the old covenant and the internal, thorough and lasting effects of that shed under the new. Note especially the “unblemished” nature of Christ’s sacrifice (14). As John the Baptist realized, he is the perfect, spotless Lamb of God (John 1:29,36). Compared with “the blood of goats and bulls” (13), Christ’s own blood is altogether another order of sacrifice. Its effect is greater than the sum total of all those thousands of earlier animal sacrifices put together. The description of Christ’s death as a “ransom” (15) echoes Jesus’ own words (Mark 10:45). “Ransom” indicates the buying-back of a hostage from a kidnapper, hinting at the work of Satan behind the reality of human sin. At last a truly effective sacrifice has been made, by which our consciences may be cleansed (14), our inheritance received (15) and our sins fully forgiven (22). The “good things” are already here (11)! How keenly are you aware of them? The illustration of the will explains why Christ had to die and testifies to his divinity. God made the covenant or will (the Greek word is the same), so God had to die before it could take effect. We begin to see a glimpse of the purpose of salvation in verse 14: we are set free from sin “so that we may serve the living God!” This theme will be further developed in chapters 10–13.
Apply
Meditate upon what Christ has done for you and for what purpose. How will you serve him for the sake of others?
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, Your shed blood leads me to a cleansed conscience (14), eternal inheritance (15a) and freedom from the bondage of sin (15b). Hallelujah!
