Meditate
“The Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any doubled-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).
Think Further
The Rev. Micah Grizzard of Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, North Carolina, made headlines in 2009 when he celebrated Halloween by burning modern translations of the Bible, which he considered to be a perversion of the King James Version. King Jehoiakim’s reason for burning the scroll on which Jeremiah had written God’s message was even more foolish: he simply did not like what God had said.
How patient God is! Again and again he sent his prophets to Israel, but again and again they spurned his offer of salvation. Now, however, the people were beginning to listen. Banned from the house of God, the prophet Jeremiah chose a day of public fasting to send a special word to all the people in the temple. It communicated powerfully enough to cause one of the leaders to organize a private reading for the top functionaries of the state. The next question was how to get through to the king, and he proved hopelessly stubborn. Far from leading his people in repentance, he consigned the message, line by line, to the fire. But for a remarkable act of divine protection he would also have destroyed Jeremiah and his secretary (26).
King Jehoiakim is only one in a long line of despots who have tried to destroy the word of God. It is an exercise both foolish and futile. It is foolish to destroy instead of heeding the message that explains the sole way out of imminent danger. Any failure to reckon with the God of the Word is ultimately futile. As this king discovered, God is always more than one step ahead! He can always renew the message, and he is more than able to look after his messenger or to send replacements when needed.
Apply
Pray for the leaders of our nation that they will take the principles laid down in God’s Word seriously.
Closing prayer
God of revelation, I pray that I will be open to the whole truth of the Bible. May I speak its truth in love and live its truth with integrity.
