Meditate
All Saint’s Day is a good time to recall those whose example of godly living challenged and encouraged you.
Think Further
A comprehensive recital of blessings (28), a prophetic glimpse into the future (1)? How are we to understand this poem, so different in character from the narrative of chapter 48? And what may we take from it for our own discipleship?
Jacob understood that his 12 sons were individuals who had made choices about how they would live their lives. He now recalls some of those choices in stark terms. His three eldest sons, children of the unloved Leah (29:31-35), have to listen to his harshest oracles. Reuben lacks integrity (4). He had intervened bravely to rescue Joseph from death (37:21,22) and risked his own sons to ensure Benjamin’s safety (42:37). But his adultery with Jacob’s concubine Bilhah (35:22) went beyond sexual sin to undermine his father’s rightful leadership. Simeon and Levi had chosen violent revenge and casual cruelty (5,6; 34:25-31); they would be divided and scattered. Judah’s future story, in contrast, introduces a note of hope, with its Messianic references (10,11). The other seven sons (not Joseph), are described in brief epigrams that seem to characterize tribal behavior and mostly look forward, rather than back at past patterns of behavior.
Jacob’s beautiful and moving oracle about Joseph, the set-apart brother (26), acknowledges the extreme pressures he had experienced and, with God’s help, resisted (23). The purposes of God had indeed made a difference to his life. Above all, Jacob pays homage to the reality in his son’s story of the Mighty One, Jacob’s Shepherd and Rock, whose faithfulness will ensure that Joseph’s life will be fruitful to the end (41:52), and the promises kept.

Closing prayer
Father, I know that I am, for better or worse, modeling the difference Jesus Christ makes in a life. My prayer is that it will be for better by encouraging others.
