Meditate
“The Apostle could never be accused of overlooking the fact that the churches were the body in which the Spirit moved, but this did not affect his careful attention to matters of detail in an organized way” (D. Stuart Briscoe).
Think Further
Paul’s vision of his part in the geographical expansion of the Gospel does not mean that it was always easy for him to decide what to do next. Here, he is faced with three challenges: the visit to Rome, evangelizing Spain, and taking the tribute of the Gentiles to Jerusalem. It is the last that becomes his priority, even though he knows that it’s the one with the most problems. There are two factors that drive Paul to this: the close relationship in Scripture between the blessing of Israel with the salvation of the Gentiles, and the responsibility he has undertaken to make a collection among the churches of Greece. Paul’s concern for the salvation of Israel has this practical focus and his own integrity won’t be compromised by a mishandling of funds entrusted to him.
Visions of future ministry should never be allowed to undermine our current responsibilities. We shouldn’t neglect a task already committed to us because we have a vision of a more strategic ministry. Similarly, we should not allow current duties to destroy our long-term vision. Paul could not forget Spain. It was at the western edge of the empire, the very end of the earth. He did not think that his life’s work would be finished until he had reached there.
Rome was still in his focus, not only for his desire to have fellowship with the believers there, but also for the ways in which they could support his onward mission. He wanted the church at Rome to understand his theology of mission and be an example of what a multicultural church should be, so that they might play a role in reaching the end of the empire with the Gospel. This is the integration of Paul’s life and ministry.
