Meditate
“Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them” (Psa. 126:6 TNIV).
Think Further
Ponder again the prophet’s lonely path: no marrying; family corpses strewn around like carrion; no funeral meals, no cup of consolation; no feasts; no bridal songs. God has withdrawn his shalom, his love, his pity. Instead of “my people,” he speaks of “these people” (10). He is throwing them out (13); repaying them double (18). Look at the way idols are described in v. 18. What is it that is so detestable about the worship of false gods? How am I going to cope with the political incorrectness of such emotion in our pluralistic times? Note, too, in this chapter the references to “place” and “land” as if the very environment is polluted by the peoples’ godlessness. I pray for my own land—the countryside or the town in which I live; the secret sorrows and the open sins; the price my environment pays for human greed and shamelessness.
The clouds part briefly in vs. 14 and 15 (repeated in 23:7,8) and in the short song of vs. 19-21. The exodus was the greatest story in Old Testament times—but one day there will be an even greater deliverance story. Reflect on the fulfillment of v. 19: nations have already come and will flow in yet greater multitudes towards the Lord from all parts of the world, abandoning their own false gods and coming to trust in the God whose name we know. All over the world, people made in the image of God have spiritual experiences of various sorts which they cannot understand because they do not know God’s name, his character, his reputation.
Apply
The Bible reveals that God has many names—think about which names are most precious to you and for what reason.
Closing prayer
Lord, I pray for all those who bring the “name above every name” to peoples near and far. Prosper their endeavors, and bring many to honor and hallow Your name.
