Meditate
“To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend; his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end…. His name shall stand forever; that name to us is love” (James Montgomery, 1771-1854).
Think Further
It is so easy to dismiss the real blessings awaiting us in the hands of God for something that is ultimately worthless. Esau did this by exchanging his birthright for a meal (16,17). So did the Israelites who, near the quaking mountain of God, exchanged the word of God for the useless image of a calf (Exod. 32). So near the blessings, and yet how widely they missed them.
Today we are offered something far superior. We are given Jesus, God’s indescribable gift (2 Cor. 9:15), the mediator whose blood brings eternal peace with God and untold blessings (24). The writer of Hebrews pleads with his fellow Jews to recognize the One who had come into their midst, and not to reject him. He compares the old covenant with the new, and declares that those who reject the new covenant face an even greater tragedy than those who rejected the old one (25). His thoughts then go to the quaking Mount Sinai and the end of all things, when all will be shaken. The only reality that will remain unshaken is the kingdom of God (28) because God is its ruler (Rev. 11:15).
How important it is, then, to be part of this unshakable kingdom even as we live in a rather shaky world. Drive your stake deep into this kingdom by making sure you do not miss God’s grace (15), and by submitting to God. Then you will display his holiness and be able to see him (14), the One who is at the center of that which is unshakable. Only this unshakable reality will remain one day. Are you–and will you be–a part of this reality? There is no compromise. We search fruitlessly when we try to find a halfway point between Jesus and the world.
Apply
Think of the many ways you can miss God’s grace. How can you ensure that you don’t?
Closing prayer
Lord, sometimes when my world is shaken, I get shaky. Thank You for the strength and stability that’s mine in You.
