Reflect
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams (1 Sam. 15:22).
We may be unfamiliar with wailing as a pastoral activity, but many cultures have or had a custom of ritual wailing after a death, while the bereaved are still in shock (17,18). Gradually, as the wailing continues, the mourners are able to release their own grief and join in the tears. The community will need plenty of time to deal with the terror and the shame that will follow the deaths and losses that Jeremiah predicts. A new generation of wailers will be needed (20). The five acrostic poems in the book of Lamentations, associated with Jeremiah, are examples of material for grieving for the destruction of Jerusalem.
Foreboding about an impending catastrophe creates a climate where it is hard to know who to trust. When resources are scarce, who might be an informer for an enemy or who might stab you in the back (4-6,8)? Most of all, who might help you understand what is going on in this bewildering time (12)? Don’t look to the obvious human sources of power—muscle, wealth or brains (23). There is only one reliable source. Keep faith in the Lord. Get to know and understand the Lord. Soak yourself in the character of the Lord (24), which is covenant love (or “kindness” in some versions) and justice, leading to right actions.
It is hard to do this in times of great suffering, when events seem to point towards God’s cruelty. To the questions in v. 12 the answer is: none of us is wise enough to explain it but, as the apostle Paul learned, God had purposes throughout history that reached their climax in Jesus. They continue to baffle the rich, the powerful and the clever (1 Cor. 1:26-30), but give comfort and hope to those who put their confidence in Christ.
Apply
Pray for God’s people who live in places where persecution is so strong it is hard to trust anyone else with information about their faith and worship.
