Meditate
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psa. 91:1). May I know Christ today and always as my refuge and fortress.
Think Further
There is more to Christian suffering than circumstances. Peter identifies Satan as the enemy behind much of the adversity that Christians face. The restlessness of Satan (8) combines with his insatiable appetite for destruction–and we are his prey. When we recognize something of the demonic power of evil, we realize how much we need the constant help of the Holy Spirit to be able to stand against it. Each act of resistance affirms our faith in Christ and declares our solidarity with those across the world who are facing attack.
Peter is convinced that just as God has called us in Christ, his power is always active on our behalf. We suffer, and God allows it, but then he restores us and we know that his strength sustains and builds us up. It is the testimony of Christ’s followers throughout history and across the globe. God is never far from us, and his love and power can provide what we need.
In signing off, Peter acknowledges Silas’s part in writing the letter. They have listened together to what the Holy Spirit says to the dispersed church and the struggles that Christians face. We can be grateful that the Spirit speaks to us today through Scripture. For we, too, need encouragement that God is with us and that any hardship we suffer will not overwhelm us. Above all, we need to experience more of God’s grace and have our trust in him deepened. We do not know what lies in store for us in the times ahead, but we do know that God is faithful and his compassion and protection will surround us. My prayer for you is that God will give you the confidence you need to stand firm and his grace to see the journey through.
