“If God is God, it is important that we know him as he is, not as we recreate him in our imaginations” (John White).
Think Further
In our reading today there is a prophecy against Babylon that the great city would be destroyed. The prophecy is replete with word plays, metaphors and a poignant, symbolic act. Jeremiah wrote judgments against Babylon to be read to the exiles. Following the reading, a stone was to be tied to the scroll and it was to be thrown into the Euphrates. As the stone sank to the bottom of the river it symbolized the fall of Babylon. That great and impressive city would sink and rise no more. This symbolic act was like a loud “Amen” following the prediction of Babylon’s doom.
The value of symbols depends on how we use them. If their meaning is lost they can become empty rituals; but if the underlying truth is kept in focus, a symbol can be a powerful tool to aid our memories and develop our understanding of divine truth. As Christians we experience the powerful symbolism of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, reminding us regularly of the truth of God’s Word and the reality of the salvation won for us.
Jeremiah lived in discouraging times. The Babylonian government seemed invincible. Since they gave credit to their gods, it was easy for the people of Israel to lose faith in their own God. The prophet uses vivid imagery and symbolism to convey the message that, although Israel was a small and beleaguered state, their God was not defeated and everything was under his control. Our powerful symbols remind us that God is not remote and that he comes to us in times of need. The bread and wine are powerful reminders of the love and compassion that brought God to earth to suffer death on our behalf. This same God is still in control and present with you and me today.

It has been said that the Devil’s favorite weapon is discouragement. How does he wield that weapon with you? How can you fortify yourself against it?
Closing prayer
Heavenly Father, there is so much in life that can make my spirit flag. Empower me by Your Spirit and keep me looking to Jesus.
