Reflect
“It takes more grace than I can tell, to play the second fiddle well.” A simple ditty, but with important implications.
In this passage Saul serves as a warning to those of us in Christian leadership: to beware the temptation to think of ourselves more highly than we ought (Rom. 12:3). Sadly, history shows that some church leaders have mistaken leadership for power over their flock, forgetting that Jesus came not to be served but to serve (Matt. 20:28). We all need to check our own attitudes from time to time. Are we serving or ruling within the ministry God has given us? A good test is whether we’re happy to play second fiddle.
Both Saul and Jonathan are said to “love” David at some point (16:21; 20:17), but whereas Jonathan’s love was genuine and constant, Saul’s was based on self-interest–David had proved himself useful in slaying giants! Such selfish love is easily open to jealousy, and now we see it degenerate into an obsessive hatred that tries to play on Jonathan’s own sense of self-interest: that of becoming king one day.
Remarkably, however, nothing deters Jonathan. He is not afraid of losing the kingship to David (23:17). He is willing to play second fiddle to his friend. He refuses to stand on his rights; he doesn’t insist on being number one. Ring any bells? How do you feel when someone else is given the job you applied for (in or out of the church), and you find yourself working for that person? How do you feel when the roles are reversed? The temptation to enjoy having power over others (congregation, work colleagues, even family) is as strong as ever, and Jonathan’s attitude has a lot to teach us.
Apply
If you find it difficult to play second fiddle to others, try talking it over with a trusted Christian friend.
Closing prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the Servant King and You call me to follow You. Give me grace to be like John the Baptist who was willing to decrease that You might increase.
