Reflect
“The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; he is their stronghold in time of trouble” (Psa. 37:39).
The terror of impending genocide is unimaginable, especially to those of us living in peaceful, harmonious cultures. Sadly, we still see examples in our own times. Recent tragic events, such as in Syria, Iraq and South Sudan, remind us that religious, racial and political factions can wreak untold havoc–and we must not forget unspeakable atrocities against modern Jews, particularly in the Holocaust. Although Haman’s evil scheming had been dealt with, the threat of his murderous edict was still there. The exiled Jews could still expect the worst.
The king seemed to think that passing on Haman’s estate to the queen and Haman’s authority to Mordecai–now revealed to be Esther’s relative–were appropriate and sufficient reparations for the events of earlier in the day. But Esther still had work to do. With much more visible emotion than previously, she persisted with her courteous but passionate plea for the rescue of her people. Only a new order by the king, she suggested, could overrule the previous destructive decree and save the Jews. Technically this was not possible under Persian law, so the king handed over the challenge of creating a viable decree, which could be signed on his behalf. Esther’s intercession had achieved the desired permissions; Mordecai then supervised the writing, signing and distribution of the edict (see Haman’s decree, 3:12-15). From now on, they were a leadership team!
The news that Jews were given permission to assemble and defend themselves from attack was greeted with happy celebration: Jews feasted instead of fasting; non-Jews were awestruck. The Greek “Addition” version of Mordecai’s edict proclaims: “the all-powerful God has made this day a day of joy and not of ruin for his chosen people.” Esther’s willingness to lay down her life made the difference.
Apply
Identify a country currently experiencing racially motivated civil war. Pray that national and global leadership will seek and find a non-violent solution to any threatened genocide.
Closing prayer
Merciful Lord, I need grace and strength from You. To take risks for You, I need my fear turned into courage.
