“They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (Isa. 40:31, ESV).
Think Further
History takes some amazing twists and turns. In the days of Moses the nation of Egypt seemed unassailable, and its warrior king was proud and secure. In the days of Jeremiah (Sixth Century BC), however, Egypt was threatened and her king was vulnerable. Nebuchadnezzar was the dominant ruler, not Pharaoh, and his expansionist regime threatened Egypt, Israel and all the surrounding nations. At the Exodus, God had given Israel victory over Pharaoh and even opened up a path through the sea for them, but that was many centuries earlier.
What could Jeremiah say to his people who were facing disaster at the hands of the Babylonians? The nation had rebelled against God and now must face the consequences. Could Jeremiah offer his people any hope? Yes, in the midst of the message of judgment rings the reassuring message, “Do not be afraid” (27,28). This reassurance is repeated to give emphasis and it is based not on Israel’s ability, but on God’s character. He is “Lord Almighty, the God of Israel” (25). In spite of what was happening all around them, his people were encouraged not to lose faith in their God.
Jeremiah’s ministry of encouragement was very important. The people needed the reassurance that they still mattered to God. Encouragement can bring a wonderful change in our lives and can remind us that we are not insignificant to God. Realizing that we are part of God’s great plan can give us a new sense of significance and can restore our spiritual well-being. We can benefit from the reassurance that Jeremiah gave the people of Israel; God Almighty is with us to help us and to give us the inner strength and spiritual energy that we need today. We do not need to be afraid.
