Meditate
“Grace means there is no person beyond redemption, no human stain beyond cleansing” (Philip Yancey). For an example of this see verses 28-29.
Think Further
Time and weather wear away monuments; but 2,800 years has done nothing to erode the sharp edges of this story. Scenes are written like a pop-up book and vivid dialogues need no amplification; it is storytelling by a master craftsman. Preachers have put this story to many uses. Be careful who you marry! The evils of drink! Naboth should have been more careful with his friends (9,10). Modern parallels abound: a university building project is obstructed by a widow’s property; the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
As so often with biblical stories, the sting is in the tail–am I offended that Ahab, described as so vile and wicked in verses 25 and 26–he is as bad as the Amorites!–gets off lightly in verses 28 and 29 (although it is not clear that Ahab was told this)? How many of the Ten Commandments are broken in this incident?
I gaze steadily from person to person. For Naboth, the deal was not just a property deal: it was his patrimony (Lev. 25:25-28; Num. 36:7). Tragically, 2 Kings 9:26 notes that Naboth’s sons were also killed, so the inheritance issue did not arise. Am I a careful and generous steward of my resources? Ahab appears as spineless as before. It seems as if his sulking was a habit (1 Kings 20:43), and he doesn’t look too closely into questionable affairs. A chilling feature of Jezebel’s actions is how she appears fastidious in keeping the letter of the law: do not curse the Lord (Lev. 24:16); do not curse the king (Exod. 22:28); two witnesses (Deut. 17:6, 19:15). I am reminded of Nazi or Khmer Rouge record-keeping in their charnel houses (house of bodies or bones). Two unnamed scoundrels appear and disappear–I am reminded of Matthew 26:60. I grieve for those who suffer from my injustices.

Is there someone whom you find it almost impossible to forgive; who is, in your opinion, the least deserving of divine mercy? What will erase this file from your memory?
Closing prayer
Lord God, You have shown me grace throughout my life, and I give my thanks to You. Enable me to be a conduit of grace to others.
