Reflect
Pause for a moment. Ask the Lord to bring to mind any ambition or attitude that is incompatible with Christ. Spend time in confession, knowing that he will forgive.
Peter is writing against a backdrop of pervasive antinomian belief–the teaching that because salvation was by grace alone, the requirements of moral law are no longer relevant. In effect, this idea cheapens grace: it accepts the atoning work of Christ but refuses to submit to his lordship in matters of godly living. Peter comments on what is happening and suggests that false teachers are to blame. False prophets, Peter argues, have always been and false teachers will always arise, so he warns his readers and helps them to identify dangerous leadership.
False teachers will be marked by their shameful ways, their greed and their made-up stories (2,3). In other words, they have a lack of integrity, they are out for their own benefit and they live to impress others. They despise authority and are full of pride (10).
It would be easy to just to nod in agreement at these verses and ignore the warnings for ourselves, but the passage is not here to be ignored or unapplied. We must be on our guard and act. We are to pray for our leaders and create environments where they are free to fly and which militate against this kind of fall.
A number of thoughts for us:
Never give authority to someone until they have come under authority.
Always choose character over competency in any appointment and give more emphasis to character development over skill development.
Look after your leaders so you are not helping to create an environment where they are likely to be tempted and fall.
Pray for your leaders’ protection and redemption.
Apply
Spend some time today praying for those whom God has placed in authority over you.
Closing prayer
Lord, I lift up the leaders of my church to You. May they be filled with wisdom and courage. Above all else, may they serve for Your glory. I pray these things for myself as well.
