KNOWING CHRIST IS ALL
Opening Prayer
Lord, cause me to be ever vigilant toward those who may lead me astray.
Read PHILIPPIANS 3:1–11
No Confidence in the Flesh
3 Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. 2 Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. 3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh— 4 though I myself have reasons for such confidence.
If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

Reflect
Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Matt. 16:24). What a glorious call!
The opponents of the Philippian believers are probably Jewish missionaries who advocate circumcision (and other aspects of the Jewish faith) for Gentile converts, so Paul warns the Philippian Christians that reliance on such rites are potentially hazardous spiritually. In verses 4–6, he presents his impressive Jewish pedigree and a list of achievements to inform the Philippians that his Jewish credentials are beyond question and that he is supremely qualified to speak on these matters. However, in verse 7 he creates a balance sheet, as it were, listing all former privileges under the heading “profits” and then writing them off as a single “loss.” Paul has learned that when you have everything yet lack Christ, in fact you have nothing!
Paul goes on in verses 8–11 to expand on this theme of loss and gain. He views every credit and achievement as loss before God, even rubbish, compared with gaining Christ. His ultimate aim in life is to know Christ—not simply a collection of certain intellectual truths but a personal knowledge that is rooted in an intimate relationship. From the moment of his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, Paul’s life has centered around knowing him more intimately.
This personal relationship includes not just enjoying the victorious side of what Christ has given us (salvation) but also sharing in his sufferings, even conforming to his death (note the language of imitation again). To know Christ in relationship is to know him who has suffered, died and is risen. Paul’s desire to conform to Christ’s death so that he may attain the resurrection from the dead traces the trajectory of Christ’s humiliation and exaltation in 2:6–11.
Apply
Paul was willing to lose everything to share in the power of Christ’s resurrection and his sufferings and death. Are you ready and willing to pursue such costly discipleship?
Closing prayer
Lord, nothing this world has to offer compares with a personal relationship with You as the captain of my salvation.
