“Faith (and hope) sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable, and receives the impossible” (Corrie Ten Boon, 1892–1983)
God tells Zechariah to perform a coronation (11), but a coronation with a difference. This is to be a symbolic action, a sign-act, something not uncommon in the ministry of Old Testament prophets (Jer. 13:1–11; Ezek. 4:1–3). Three new arrivals from Babylon have brought with them silver and gold (10), probably given by the Babylonians (Ezra 1:4). The crown (probably two crowns entwined, representing priest and king) was placed on Joshua’s head. However, unlike other coronations, Joshua is addressed in the third person, “Here is the man…” (12), not “you.” This is not about him—he is “symbolic of things to come” (Zech. 3:8).
For the people of Judah this answered one of their biggest questions. They could see that restoration was on its way: the altar and sacrifice had been reestablished and rebuilding of the Temple had started—but what about a king? Shouldn’t they expect the line of David to be restored too? It was a nice idea, but even with a relatively sympathetic King Darius ruling, surely it was a hope too far? No, it wasn’t—and God graciously gave them a sign, a symbol of hope to keep (14). So often the issue for us, as it was for them, is timing: When? How long? Do you have any memorials of God’s promise which will help you persevere?
The central figure, well known to them, is the Branch (Isa. 4:2–6; Jer. 23:5–6), the Messiah. Yes, he is still coming! But notice the big vision: “he will branch out from his place” (12). As Isaiah said, “of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end” (Isa. 9:7). He will be both king and priest (13), rebuilding the Lord’s Temple—physical and spiritual—with those from far away (15). This big vision includes us. Hope lives on!

“There is a hope that lifts my weary head, / a consolation strong against despair” (Stuart Townend and Mark Edwards). What have you learned about the Christian’s hope from today’s passage?
Closing prayer
Mighty God, when the world has done its worst to me, when I could plunge into the deepest despair, I take heart because You are there with me.
