Meditate
“Our table is the one around which we meet for communion, taking the food and drink which is symbolic of the spiritual benefits we enjoy because of Christ’s death” (Grace Tomlinson). And what great benefits they are!
Think Further
The way we furnish our homes says a lot about us. Many enjoy selecting new furniture and interior design. Some want to hold on to old furniture because of the precious memories it holds. Today and tomorrow, we see God furnishing and designing his home, the tabernacle. These chapters repeat earlier sections in Exodus to stress their importance.
God uses the skilled craftsmen, Bezalel and Oholiab, for the task (35:30-35) but fills them with his Spirit so they are not working by natural talent alone. Having manufactured the structure (36:8-38), they now produce exquisite pieces, overlaid with pure gold, to go inside, symbolizing God’s relationship with his people. Here is a rebuke to those who believe God is only interested in the plain and boring. Each piece has meaning. The ark (1-9) is the most significant. This small beautiful chest contained important tokens of God’s past salvation: the tablets of the law, Aaron’s rod, and some manna. It served as God’s throne and was therefore accompanied by heavenly attendants. It also spoke of his mercy, since full atonement was accomplished there (Lev. 16:4). The table (10-16) signified God’s provision for his people; the lampstand (17-24) his holiness, giving the people light for their lives; and the altar (25-29) the worship they would offer to their covenant God.
When faith was tough and doubts arose, the ark served as an undeniable witness to God’s powerful salvation. When sin was committed it pointed to there being a sacrifice to atone for it. At all times it reminded them of God’s presence with his people. The other furniture served as visual aids to support faith in different ways.

Consider the New Testament equivalents, such as baptism and the Lord’s Supper. What tangible aids to faith do you have to strengthen your relationship with God daily?
Closing prayer
Heavenly Father, I celebrate Your presence with me and rejoice in the assurance of Your pardon and peace.
