Think Further
For 40 years Hosea called the northern kingdom to return to God, but he got no response. Despite his passionate cries expounding the love of God for this wayward people, his words fell on deaf ears. Given the choice between the Lord and Baal, they chose the latter, believing that to be the best route to strength, security and success. How short-sighted and disobedient they were! Things went from bad to worse as they became addicted to their false religion. Looking for security in the wrong place, their choice led to disaster. Like the morning mist, they were in danger of disappearing.
It was not too late. God, despite being repeatedly rejected, still longs to help his people. His record is impressive, going back to their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Yet even in those early days in the wilderness, the children of Israel were ambivalent towards God and all too quickly became proud and independent. They wanted a king, and in so doing, rejected the King. The granting of their request only accelerated their decline and brought social divisions into society. Put simply, they had made their choices and repeatedly made the wrong ones. They rejected the consistent testimony of God that he could and would protect, provide and deliver them.
We, too, are tempted to put our trust in the latest and the best, and sideline God as no longer the driving force in our lives. Nothing hurts a relationship more than being taken for granted, or else being made to feel you are yesterday’s choice. As in Revelation, there comes a time when people will not repent because they are locked into their choices. It takes so little but can cost so much, simply and sincerely, to call to God.
Apply
How is it evident (to you and others) that God is the driving force in your life? If you need any help from God as you make choices today, ask for God’s help.
Closing prayer
Lord, thank You for the width, length, depth and height of Your love. It embraces me, forgives me, and challenges me. May You be the driving force of my life!
