What encouragements and challenges do you look for from the Lord?
Think Further
A bed, a rebuke and an encouragement–these are interesting features of today’s passage. As Moses leads the Israelites towards the Promised Land, they encounter the aptly named Og (“gigantic”) of Bashan and his famous bed. The Israelites captured 60 towns within his territory which were well-defended with high walls, strong gates and iron bars (1-10). The conquest of this well-populated, fertile and urbanized area (in present-day Syria and Lebanon) would have encouraged Joshua to learn that God was able to give victory in any situation and to approach coming battles without fear. Moses is similarly encouraged and asks God’s permission to be allowed to enter the Promised Land–but this will be refused.
Og’s bed (11) is a trophy of victory, demonstrating his greatness, size and authority. It was doubtless a popular tourist attraction and curiosity in Rabbah (11). To Israel it would be a reminder of this great victory. Og was a descendant of giants (“Rephaim” can mean “ancient royal ancestors,” Gen. 14:5), his bed an early example of iron-age technology and decoration. It spoke volumes that Israel could overpower such a mighty, legendary figure. Maybe you too have trophies of spiritual victories in the past.
The defeated giant and his empty bed inspire Moses’ exhortations. Joshua must go forward with assured faith (21-24). Despite earlier refusal (Deut. 1:37), Moses again pleads for the opportunity to enter the land. While we sympathize with Moses’ request to see the fruit of his labors, there are hints that Moses has brought upon himself the lost opportunity. God’s response is blunt to the point of harshness. No! He will be allowed to see it from afar, but not enter it fully.

Are you experiencing seemingly unanswered prayer? Are you willing to accept God’s “no” as well as his “yes”? If necessary, ask God to increase your faith and patience.
Closing prayer
Lord, keep me in the center of Your will and purpose. Help me to believe that when You say “no,” it is for my good. Increase my faith.
