Shepherd God, quiet my racing pulse, restore my jaded spirit, and lead me beside still waters now, I pray.

Reflect
“By faith Noah … became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith” (Heb. 11:7). Righteousness through faith, a familiar theme.
As I write, large regions of Australia are reeling from floods, and a few months ago much of Pakistan was inundated. All seems chaotic, and questions concerning God are common. There is no warrant for seeing these disasters as “God’s judgment.” Nevertheless, God’s “never again” (9:15) provides reassurance.
Noah does “as God commanded” (6:22; 7:5,9,16). Beyond that, we know nothing of his thoughts, even when shut up in the ark for a year. The focus is on the God who is sovereign throughout. God brings a return to watery chaos (11), destroying everything “I have made” (4): earth, birds, wild animals, humans (19-23; the same order as ch. 1). Destructive waters “increased” (17; c.f. 1:22,28). Then, right in the middle, are details of all God saves because Noah followed his instructions before “the Lord shut him in” (13-16). In the Pentateuch, the ark and the tabernacle are the only buildings whose dimensions are described. “The people of Israel which alone has in its midst the place where God reveals his glory is part of the human race which exists now because it has been preserved by this same God” (Westermann). Deliverance through the ark, which Peter compares with baptism (1 Pet. 3:18-22), points God’s people beyond themselves to God’s saving purposes for all.
God’s orderly direction is affirmed in the reversing pattern of 7, 7, 40, 150, 150, 40, 7, 7 days (4,10,17,24; 8:3,6,10,12), around the center of 8:1. What God brings, he undoes. While this flood was not repeated, imagery of God’s control over chaotic waters remains a powerful expression of stability and hope of deliverance in the threats and turmoil of life and history. Through and beyond the floods, he brings renewal and peace.
Apply
Today’s reading ends when it seems matters are getting worse. Pray for those, perhaps yourself, who are in chaotic circumstances.
Closing prayer
I praise You, Lord, because You are a turn-around God. You can reverse the worst situation. Thank You for the hope that brings me.
