Meditate
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want” (Psa. 23:1, KJV).
Think Further
In Luke’s account, the first to become aware of Jesus are humble shepherds. This is appropriate. David was a shepherd; Jesus would become the Great Shepherd to care for God’s flock (1 Sam. 16:11; Luke 15:1-7; Matt. 18:12-14; John 10:14). The shepherds, enveloped in God’s glory, are terrified. They are comforted with the words Gabriel spoke earlier to Mary, “Do not be afraid!” The angel’s message is “good news.” Why? Because Israel’s Savior, the Christ (Messiah) and Lord of the world is born. What a moment! This message is not some good news of the Roman Empire, as the Greek word euangelion was often used, but the greatest of all news. It is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s dream of redemption (Isa. 40:9; 52:7; 61:1). It is a message of joy for all people.
As before, the angel’s message is accompanied by a sign. Zechariah was struck mute. Mary was given the sign of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. Now, the shepherds are given the sign of a baby in a manger. Then the third hymn in Luke erupts from heaven itself. Jesus’ birth has shattered the barrier between heaven and earth. Heaven’s joy resounds around the fields of Bethlehem. God’s Son is born! God has come to restore his world! The song is the Gloria in Excelsis from the first words of the Latin: Gloria in Excelsis Deo. The song encapsulates the import of Jesus’ coming. He will bring glory to the God in the heavens. He will bring peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased. While the Good News has penetrated much of God’s world, so many are still lost and have yet to hear it. Ours is to take the message to them. How will we take up the challenge?
Apply
Of all the people the angels could have visited, why did God send them to the shepherds? How has God spoken to You in the ordinary flow of life?
Closing prayer
Lord, I want to be alert to hear Your voice. I don’t want to miss Your call. Grant me listening ears.
