Meditate
“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world” (C.S. Lewis).
Think Further
TV “reality shows” where family members are reunited are very popular. We love happy endings which wipe away the hurts and loneliness of lost years. Imagine being one of Joseph’s brothers as he tearfully revealed himself. Perhaps you were Reuben, Simeon, Judah, or Benjamin; would you feel joy knowing this man was your long-lost brother? Or, would you feel anger at his testing and teasing? Would you question whether his story was really true? They were actually terrified just being with him (43:18,23). Brother or not, they had double reason for alarm. Joseph, first rejected by them as a boy, was now revered as a powerful man who held the key to family survival.
Joseph’s long explanatory speech was followed by hugs and weeping, however. The purposefulness of their dark history became clear: God was the designer of Joseph’s elevation to political power. This not only saved the region from famine, but their family line from extinction. Their short-term future as immigrants to the outlying Egyptian territory of Goshen was secure, and their prosperity was generously enhanced. Interestingly, from the historical perspective of family dynamics, Joseph showered his favorite brother with special gifts, maybe enough to precipitate another family squabble!
Jacob’s unbelievable discovery that Joseph, after all, was actually alive, comes at the end. Imagine yourself as one of the deceptive sons as they broke the news. How shameful it must have been! Jacob’s overwhelming delight is reminiscent of the returning prodigal’s father: the lost is found! His stunned joy reflects that of the women at Jesus’ empty tomb and the disciples in the upper room on resurrection day. Jesus is alive!
Apply
In the light of your resurrection hope, ask (or thank) God for a surprising outcome to a seemingly hopeless situation.
Closing prayer
Lord, I am reminded again that You are the God of startling surprises. Help me not to lose my sense of expectancy.
