False Deity
Opening Prayer
Father, You are the God of the great and small, the young and old, the strong and weak. I praise You, Lord.

Meditate
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing, and perfect will” (Rom. 12:2).
Think Further
Having chosen to ignore God’s advice and go to Egypt for the false hope of a better life, the people can hardly expect God’s sustaining presence in this new, but wrong, place. Inevitably, they drifted from God to the false deity of the new land. Jeremiah doggedly chose to remain with his people despite his dire warnings about their future. Israel’s biggest temptation had always been to desert God (e.g., Exod. 31:1) and seek gods like those of their neighbors. Even before the Babylonian conquest, some had worshipped the Queen of Heaven, i.e., Astarte, prominent in the Semitic pantheon of gods (Jer. 7:16-18). Deities like Astarte were attractive, thought to have local power and to be less stern and more permissive. Significantly, women were attracted to this goddess. Jewish religious practice emphasized a male priesthood whereas the Astarte cult gave women specific, enjoyable roles.
The cults of foreign gods were banned under Josiah’s reforms (2 Kings 23:13-14), but the reformation was short-lived. Judah’s decline led to their defeat and subjugation by Babylon. While Jeremiah rightly understood this as the consequence of disloyalty to God, Jewish women in Egypt blamed the cessation of the Astarte cult. They wrongly attributed their seemingly good lifestyle in Egypt to resuming the worship of Astarte.
What was true of them can be true of us. If we are, by choice, in the wrong place, we cannot expect God to bless what we do. We can be lured into the false expectation of profit or self-fulfillment by adopting the priorities of those around us, counting on other means of safeguarding our futures than the Lord we should worship.
Apply
Amazing how people can hear God’s Word, see God’s power, and yet disobey God. How were you like that with your parents? How are you like that with your Parent in heaven?
Closing prayer
Dear God, I know my future is with You. Help me to avoid false promises of security and remain faithful to You and Your ways.
