Meditate
“We are to believe and live and love and work as though Jesus Christ died yesterday, rose today, and is coming again tomorrow” (Martin Luther, 1483-1546).
Think Further
We’re accustomed to “experts” forecasting the weather, the stock market and the sports results for us. Perhaps we’ve lost some of the intuitive skills of earlier generations in observing the movement of seasons, heavenly bodies, and cloud formations–even bursting buds–which herald changes and provide guidance for action. Jesus, ever the keen observer, suggested that, just as the sprouting fig tree inevitably foreshadows the arrival of summer, so will the amazing events previously described be the inevitable precursor to his return in great power. But while he warned that these signs would indicate his imminent return, his followers should not be complacent. They need to be watchful, while constantly diligent in their assigned tasks, as even he didn’t know when he would return. The exact timing will be a surprise to all but his Father!
The meaning of “this generation” (30) is disputed. It could refer back to those who would experience the events surrounding the coming siege of Jerusalem and destruction of the temple (1-23); or forward to the broader generation of Jesus’ disciples who await the promised fulfillment of his coming in power and glory (24-27), or both! However, Jesus guarantees that the truth of his words is more certain than even the existence of heaven and earth.
As we approach the Advent season, we remember the first coming of the one who came from heaven as a “helpless Babe, [and] entered our world, his glory veiled.” Jesus, the “servant King,” “calls us now to follow him, and give our lives as a daily offering” (Graham Kendrick). As we serve him now, we must also look forward, alertly, to the day of his return in the full glory of his kingdom (2 Pet. 3:10-14). Let’s not be caught sleeping!
Apply
Paul spoke of “encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory” (1 Thess. 2:12). Embrace that for yourself and your Christian community.
Closing prayer
Lord, I want to encourage others in a godly life. May my life demonstrate what faith can do. I want to be ready for Your return.
