“The retribution that follows deals with the moment when God’s patience with corrupt, idolatrous, impenitent systems finally runs out” (Dennis Lennon).
Think Further
Judgment has been predicted for a long while; now it is being poured out on Babylon. We should not just be thinking about people but systems. God enlists the natural order to destroy the empire that thought it ruled over all. Those who have received the mark of the beast (Rev. 13:16) are now covered with suppurating sores. Blood, which they have spilled, pollutes the sea. The water from which they would drink also turns to blood. God’s judgment is a reaping of what people have sown. With the fifth bowl, God begins the final chapter in the history of Babylon. All the lights of the empire go out.
As Babel near the dawn of creation, we see a kingdom whose people’s aim was to make a name for themselves (Gen. 11:4) and who have rejected the dominion of the Lord Almighty. As the peoples of the earth gather to resist the King of heaven, there is an astonishing stubbornness to turn and give honor to the one to whom it is due; as the plagues increase in intensity, again and again, we read that “they refused to repent and glorify him” (9,11). Even as the plagues of blood, sores and darkness did not turn the heart of the Ruler of Egypt, we are reminded of the blinding pride of Pharaoh that had him think that he could successfully overcome the God who was in the cloud of smoke, the pillar of fire and the parting of the sea (cf. Exod. 14:23).
In the midst of this great battle, there is a word to the members of the church—a word of warning. Christ will come again “like a thief” (2 Pet. 3:10). Those who know our task in the world understand that it is to keep ourselves awake and clothed and to be witnesses as long as we can.
