“At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light, And the burdens of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight…” (Isaac Watts, 1674-1748).
Think Further
A few years ago the clergy at our church wanted us to get a fresh look at this familiar crucifixion story, so they closed the church one Sunday and encouraged everyone to see The Passion of the Christ together. It felt odd, skipping church to watch a movie, but the film helped me visualize in gruesome color the description of the crucifixion I’d been reading in black and white for years. What new thing did you notice as you read this passage today? Take a moment to read it again now, perhaps using a different translation.
What I noticed was those who were forced to make a decision about Jesus. Simon of Cyrene wasn’t invited to participate: he was ordered to carry the cross. I wonder what he was thinking. Was he embarrassed to be called out of the crowd, angry to be strong-armed by the soldiers, ashamed to be identified with a condemned man? Some people spiritualize, “Oh well, we all have our crosses to bear, don’t we?” but for Simon, following Jesus was much more difficult than he ever imagined. Have there been times when following Jesus forced you onto a very rough road?
Then there were the criminals on either side. This encounter with Jesus was completely against their will. The first was angry, sarcastic and abusive (39), but the second responded with insight and contrition (40-42). For 13 years I was on the staff of Prison Fellowship and heard founder Chuck Colson preach from this text many times in prison. I was always moved to see men who knew they were guilty, before God and man, respond in faith. Even though I walked out of the prison at the end of each service, it was always the repentant inmates who were drawn closest to Jesus (43).
