“God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but he has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination” (Augustine).
Think Further
Repetition is a preacher’s stock in trade. Once again this chapter says that the Lord is going to discipline his people. We might prefer Jeremiah to say God is withdrawing his protection to allow an inevitable Babylonian invasion. That emphasis can be found in v. 8. But the prophet also presents an active picture of God inflicting punishment (6) or doing drastic surgery to remove infected organs and limbs (7). The sense of urgency is heightened by the picture of warriors building their siege ramps against the walls of Jerusalem. They have permission to pick away the fruit of Israel like the hungry gleaners in a vineyard (9).
Yet all this is still at the stage of a warning. Jeremiah is trying to pour out the message burning inside him (10,11). Against him, priests and prophets are contradicting his message, calming people down, saying, “All will be well. Just keep your donations for the temple sacrifices flowing as before” (13,14,20). They are at a crossroads. The crowd is surging along the broad road “that leads to destruction,” as Jesus put it (Matt. 7:13). The good way has been known from of old through the Word of God (16,19). People glance briefly down that narrow path but then pass on.
Most evangelists can identify with Jeremiah. The serious warnings that are part of the gospel message hurt and upset people. When a conversation starts to lead to a challenge, most people hurry past. There are even churches where leaders don’t want preachers to make their donors uncomfortable. In the final paragraph, Jeremiah is encouraged to view himself as one of God’s testers of metal. If his words burn away dross, the silver can shine. But it seems there is going to be too little to save.
