“At the cross we marvel at Jesus ナ trusting the promises of his Father in the face of monumental contradictions, and inviting us to follow” (Barbara Brown Taylor).
Think Further
Two stories: Jesus and the blind man. Two men marked by suffering and difficulties in life; most humans can identify with them. Jesus describes the circumstances that he is facing (31-33). He has a clear mission, and the likely consequences are obvious: public shame and suffering. The secret that sustained him was that his actions were based on the outcome of his mission, not on its cost.
At that time a blind man (35-43) was invisible and a pariah for society; to be heard, he needs to shout louder (39). He understands his needs, but society cannot meet them. By rejecting the blind man, society transfers the weight of the responsibility to the individual, himself. Ironically, his desperation enables the blind man to see beyond his limitations. Difficult times and suffering make us think about the important things in life. A comfortable, easy life tends to blind us to formative factors and events and circumstances God uses to shape our life.
From this narrative emerges a third story, represented in the disciples and the crowd. The disciples are clueless about what Jesus is saying: they are blind (34). The crowd has political expectations of Jesus, but his lifestyle and ministry disturb their expectations. Instead of seeking understanding, they become an obstacle to God’s work. The expression “its meaning was hidden from them” (34) does not point to any ill intentions of Jesus. They were not equipped to see the big picture; neither had they attempted to understand. Lack of understanding makes one blind to God’s work in the world.
Apply
In worship we open our eyes to God’s lordship, the big picture and the meaning of our personal story (43). Consider your life in the light of God’s big plan for you and the world.
Closing prayer
Father, lift me above my small world, and enable me to see my place in Your wider work. Help me to play my part in it well.
