Reflect
“This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 3:6).
Genesis 2 is not strictly a creation narrative but an account of events in “a garden in the east” (8). The structure and focus differ from Genesis 1. The first account speaks primarily of God, building up gradually to the climax of the creation of men and women. Here we have a more earthly perspective, presenting what is known as an inclusio, where the beginning and end form a twin focus. We start with the man and end with the woman, indicating even more strongly than Genesis 1 that gender is not incidental to creation but lies at the heart of God’s intentions for his world. Until the woman is created, life on earth is “not good” (18). The fact that she is to be Adam’s “helper,” a word normally applied to God (15 out of its 19 occurrences in the Old Testament) could imply that she is to be a senior advisor. However, she is to be a helper suitable for, or matching up to, him. As in Genesis 1, it is the idea of the two together, the same yet different, that is presented as the way that God intended his world to be. Verse 24 presents marriage as the example par excellence of the complementarity and partnership of the sexes, but that does not give those of us who are single the excuse to opt out! Society functions best when men and women work together in all institutions that make up community life, to ensure that God’s purposes for the world are carried out and God’s presence continues to be reflected by his people. That is not to say that male-only or female-only sports clubs or exercise classes are wrong! Rather, anything which includes both men and women needs to reflect the contribution of both in its organization and management.

Closing prayer
Heavenly Father, I marvel at the wisdom of Your creation. I thank You for the contribution our maleness and femaleness brings to life.
