BABYLON HAS FALLEN
Opening Prayer
Lord, I dedicate this day “to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with” You (Mic. 6:8). Help me, I pray.

Meditate
We need to handle our money in a way that will draw us to God.
Think Further
The years 1929 and 2008 saw the collapse of financial systems in North America and Europe. Recovery from the latter is still taking place. The fall of Babylon depicts a similar economic collapse, but this is complete and final. This chapter combines symbol and reality to depict a great trading nation’s collapse. All the merchants who have made their fortunes through her begin to tremble. All whose lives today are driven by the accumulation of wealth should read this chapter carefully and prayerfully. All of us should consider our complicity in markets flooded with products produced in part by slave labor.
Systems of wealth that are based in covetousness, thrive in greed, practice extortion, use people like commodities and measure everything economically are going to be destroyed by God. The voice that was heard speaking gently in the Gospel, “Go, sell your possessions and give to the poor” (Matt. 19:21), now becomes the voice of God saying, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins” (4).
The struggle is ongoing. This mother of all prostitution is actively enticing. Sometimes she demands blood from the church, at other times she invites Christians into the sensual delights of her embrace, whether it be in the seductions of political or financial power or the luxuries of pleasure that make heaven remote. We as the people of God today continue to be faced with the challenge to remain true to our Lord as the people of the Lamb who has been slain and has conquered. It is only such people who will know the final victory.
Apply
There is an urgent and radical call here. What does it mean for you to come out of Babylon?
Closing prayer
Father, all that I have has come from You. Grant me wisdom to use it for Your glory.
