Meditate
“We must allow the Word of God to confront us, to disturb our security, to undermine our complacency and to overthrow our patterns of thought and behavior” (John Stott, 1921-2011). A great thought to keep in mind for 2016!
Think Further
Luke begins his gospel with two chapters for the reader privileged to have inside knowledge: stories of angels, visions, dreams and prophecy fulfilled. Not everybody in Palestine knew of these supernatural events. Now the more earthly story of Jesus’ ministry begins, with the preparatory work of John the Baptist and the arrival of the Messiah.
There were numerous stories of miracle-workers around at the time, but this one is unique in that it is set in real history. Real people, real rulers, real political power. In the midst of it all there was a fever of expectation among the Jews that the Messiah was coming and that he would save his people. How little they understood what that salvation meant! John’s mission was to turn their expectation to readiness. What a shock his message–and Jesus’ ministry–must have brought (16-17). Ironically, the one person who had some intimation of danger was Herod.
As contributors to Encounter with God we are provided with a powerful set of guidelines, and they begin with the challenging statement: “The aim of Encounter with God is to help readers to approach God’s Word each day with awe and expectancy.” This is just what John the Baptist was doing! (Though it wasn’t the written word but the Living Word he was preparing people for.) Many Jews of his time were complacent, imagining they were secure in their identity as children of Abraham. We too can all too easily become careless–long years of discipleship, assimilation to the people around, even a faulty theology–can lull us into complacency. Do you want a genuine encounter with God? It begins with honesty and repentance, awe and expectancy.

What would John say to you in your situation? How are you a Christian at work? At home? How does it show?
Closing prayer
Lord God, I long to begin this new year with an encounter with You. May honesty and repentance, awe and expectancy, fill my life.
