Meditate
“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. . . forget not all his benefits” (Psa. 103:1,2).
Think Further
Read the chapter slowly. Allow its majestic breadth to sweep over you and in you. Meditate on its repeated reminders of God’s rich generosity in all that he has done and desires to do: his promises from Abraham on, his mighty deliverance and a good and prosperous life ahead in the land, with laws to sustain that life. The riches made known through Christ continue the story (Luke 1:68-79; Eph. 3:6-21; Heb. 11:39–12:3). The Lord, “the God of your ancestors,” is “our God” (3,4) and the only response can be to “love. . . fear. . . serve him only” (5,13). “Love with all the heart means sole recognition of the beloved to the exclusion of any rival. Indeed, ‘love’ in the ancient Near East connotes loyalty.”
Here is love with all I am and have (5). The “heart” is the center of thinking and decision-making. The “soul” is one’s life, early Jewish tradition seeing a willingness to sacrifice one’s life for God. “Strength” is both ability and means, often being equivalent to “wealth.” There is directness in confronting what will happen when the people experience God’s generosity in the land. “You” are warned of erosion of faith, taking all for granted, forgetting the past (10-12; 8:17, “I have done this myself”) and following the ways of people around us (14). The risks of people forgetting do not stop God’s generosity, but disobedience has consequences (15,16), as happens in any society where laws for the good of community are flouted.
No wonder Deuteronomy 6 emphasizes remembering these words in all of life and with all the family (6-9,20-25). There is no place for a private religion that is not brought into the public activities of agriculture and building (10-12), to which we might add politics, commerce and leisure.
Apply
Evaluate where you, and your loved ones, may be experiencing less than God’s best because of your decisions. Turn to God for forgiveness and restoration.
Closing prayer
King of Israel and of my life, I desire to live according to Your plan and see the reality of Your kingdom and its blessings demonstrated in and through me.
