“That word above all earthly powers” (Martin Luther, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God). Christ Jesus, the Living Word, is truly “Lord of All.”
Think Further
History ends and heaven begins, with a cake. A wedding cake! Do you remember the last wedding you attended, and the huge cake in the corner with two figurines on top? What a great symbol for the closest relationship on earth, and the closest in the new world that’s coming! Chapter 21:1-8 is a summary of all that has gone before, and is also a sevenfold preview of all that lies ahead. The angel invites John to look at the bride in vs. 9-21 and the groom (using the term “the Lamb”) in vs. 22-27. This marriage will never drift into dullness, divorce or death!
The great surprise is that we move from the image of “a bride beautifully dressed for her husband” (2) to the image of a city. How do you prepare a city to be a safe and attractive and welcoming place? You start with shining light. Many of our cities’ ills flourish at night, in dark places. Then you add the security of 12 walls and 12 foundations. Jesus has courted his bride through a dozen tribes of Israel and a dozen apostles. And then we add the spaciousness of a cube, 1,500 miles in every direction! This marriage is not restrictive, but opens its arms to all, though not without boundaries! Finally, the beauty of sparkling gems makes the city a very attractive place.
The focus so far has been on the bride, but now her partner is introduced (22-27), with the Lamb mentioned three times in these verses. Did you notice all the kings bringing their gifts in honor of the new couple? And our gift to him? To be a bride “without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish” (Eph. 5:27).

What images of heaven, as pictured in the “New Jerusalem,” can you find in this passage? What do these truths mean to you? Picture yourself the “bride of Christ.”
Closing prayer
Gracious Father, please dull in me a taste for this world and create in me an appetite for heaven so I may be a spotless, pleasing bride for Christ.
