When Jesus Reigns
Opening Prayer
Glorious Jesus, Lamb of God and Lion of Judah, You are beautiful in Your humility and in Your majesty.
Read LUKE 24:50-53
[50] When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. [51] While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. [52] Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. [53] And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. Reflect
What did Jesus do as he left the disciples?Jesus has given the disciples the task of taking the message of hope to all the world. He is going to stick around and help them to accomplish the job, right?Actually, he ascends to heaven, to be seated, as Paul writes in Colossians 3:1, at the right hand of God. He assumes the throne set aside for the Son and reigns from there. Jesus’ ascension reveals his true identity: he is the King of heaven and earth. No wonder the disciples worship him (52,53). Jesus enters his glory after first going through suffering, in order to reclaim the territory lost to sin and death. So he is in a position to help us on our journey through this same territory. He is our King, and he has blazed for us the trail to his kingdom. This world is still under the influence of Satan and his dark angels, but Jesus has overcome the world through the cross. He is seated on his throne in heaven and he is coming again. Now is the time to live in allegiance to the heavenly kingdom that will one day fill the earth, and to proclaim that kingdom.
