THE KING ON A COLT
Opening Prayer
I may not know what this day holds for me, Father, but I thank you that I do know you hold me in your hand.
Read LUKE 19:28–44
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[a]
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

Reflect
Sometimes the Scriptures become so familiar they lose their wonder and impact. As you read today’s passage, try to imagine what the different characters were thinking and feeling. How might you have reacted if you’d been there? In two of the other gospel accounts of this episode (Matthew 21:1–9; John 12:12–15), we are told that Jesus’ decision to ride a colt into Jerusalem was the fulfillment of a prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. The long-awaited Savior and true King of Israel would come to his people riding on the foal of a donkey.
All other conquering kings in history, and in myths and legends, have come to claim their throne riding on impressive, powerful beasts, not on untrained baby donkeys! Jesus’ mode of transport was yet another hint to his followers that his kingdom and reign would be very different from anything the world had ever seen. They would be marked by humility, not by great pomp and circumstance.
Jesus knew that neither the crowds shouting their praises, nor the Pharisees who rebuked them, really understood what was going on (vv. 38–40). As he caught sight of Jerusalem, he wept (v. 41), knowing that its people would not embrace their salvation, but would turn away from it, leading to their destruction. Jerusalem was besieged and destroyed, as Jesus prophesied, in 70 AD (vv. 43, 44).
Apply
Jesus weeps over all those who reject him, not wanting anyone to be lost (2 Peter 3:9). In what ways does your heart reflect Jesus’ sorrow for the lost?
Closing prayer
O Lord, I lift up my country and its people to you. Forgive us where we have lost sight of you; I plead for revival, for your healing and blessing.
