Sky Signing
Opening Prayer
Father God, I thank You that You hear my prayers. Give me strength through Your Word today.
Read Psalm 57
[1] For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam. When he had fled from Saul into the cave. Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. [2] I cry out to God Most High, to God, who vindicates me. [3] He sends from heaven and saves me, rebuking those who hotly pursue me- God sends forth his love and his faithfulness. [4] I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts- men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. [5] Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. [6] They spread a net for my feet- I was bowed down in distress. They dug a pit in my path- but they have fallen into it themselves. [7] My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. [8] Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. [9] I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. [10] For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. [11] Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. Reflect
Have you ever felt that you were pursued by trouble? Where do you turn for refuge in these times? Did you notice how this song switches between the earth and the skies all the way through? Ifnot, take another look. Earth, sky, earth, sky. The earth is where trouble is; the skies and beyondare where rescue comes from. David is the singer, King Saul is his pursuer. In 1 Samuel 24they’re in the cave together—David hiding with his band of outlaws, King Saul coming in toanswer a call of nature.Notice how the singer refers to God: “God,” “Lord,” and then “God Most High,” meaning thatnothing can stop him from sending help; nothing and no one is more important than he is. That’swhy priest Melchizedek uses it in Genesis 14:19,20, when Abram goes into battle to rescue Lot,and God protects him. This is sky singing.Whatever is going on with us “down here,” on our long walk of faith, we can still break throughit by lifting our heads up high in praise. Verses 5 and 11 are the chorus. Use them now as aspringboard for your own praises.Did you notice how this song switches between the earth and the skies all the way through? If not, take another look. Earth, sky, earth, sky. At the beach, small planes are often hired to spell out messages: sky signing. If you could hire that plane for a day, what would you write in the sky about God?
Closing prayer
God Most High, I praise You that even in the midst of my troubles, You fulfill Your purposes for my life.
