PEOPLE GET READY
Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, there is nothing good that you withhold from me; help me to use all that I am and have to serve you.

10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”
12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your children and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle, must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites. You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”
16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!”

Reflect
Before starting the day, we take time to get ourselves ready. Coming before God requires heart preparation. Take time to be still, breathe slowly, and be mindful that you are drawing near to God.A major emphasis in the book of Joshua is that God is giving them the land, just as he promised to Abraham and the other patriarchs so long ago. They will inherit the land as a gift, but at the same time, must go and take possession of it. Here is an abiding principle: God initiates and we respond; God gives and we receive.
Although the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have permission to stay on the eastern side of the Jordan, they must still be involved in capturing the land and be ready to fight alongside the other tribes (vv. 12–15). Their response is commendable; they do not wish to shirk their responsibilities (vv. 16–18).
Notice too, how they encourage Joshua, promising the same allegiance to him they gave to Moses, encouraging him with a timely reminder that God will be with him, exhorting him to be strong and brave (v 18). All leaders, however confident they may appear, need the support of those they lead. Don’t assume because they appear competent and in control that leaders do not wrestle with insecurity and the need for affirmation.
Apply
Are you ever tempted to shirk responsibilities, opting for a comfortable life? How can you show support to your leaders? What words of encouragement might God ask you to share today?
Closing prayer
Holy Spirit, lead me as I pray. Bring to my mind things for which I have forgotten to express thanksgiving, other people and their situations I have neglected to bring before heaven’s throne. Give me a heart that overflows with gratitude and that is outward focused, sensitive to needs outside of my own.
