Opening Prayer
Father, teach me to walk in quiet confidence and to obey Your Word.
Read 1 PETER 1:22-2:3
[22] Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. [23] For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. [24] For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, [25] but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you. [1] Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. [2] Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, [3] now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. Reflect
What do we need if we are to grow?“I’m hungry! What can I eat?” My small grandson has an insatiable appetite and is constantly hungry. He’s growing fast and needs fuel for his young body. And you? What food are you desperate for? Peter reminds us that we need to crave pure “spiritual milk” and cry out for its nourishment, so that we will grow spiritually (2:2); that first gulp of the Lord’s kindness and love should have us longing to know more of him in our lives so that we grow and mature. Like my grandson, we need to ask for more! As we grow and mature spiritually, becoming more Christ-like in our daily lives, there will be a difference in us. The Word of God teaches us to love each other (1:22), to turn away from everything that is the opposite of that love (2:1), and to go on growing (2:2)! It’s like learning to desire healthy food and not eat stuff that is bad for us. And the living Word of God, Jesus himself (see John 1:1,14), is what changes us (1:23).
Apply
Take in the “spiritual milk” that you need. Meditate on a specific passage that is speaking to you.
Closing prayer
Father, help me develop my appetite for what is true and lose my taste for what is worthless.
